Hiyoko decides to join the student council on April 11 of 2188.

The vote for the student council was skipped, and Hiyoko and Sakuya Le Bel Shirogane are the only members. Hiyoko attends the first meeting on April 15, where she is wowed by the splendor of the student council room, which had been renovated by Sakuya upon his arrival. Sakuya asks what position Hiyoko will take and Hiyoko expresses surprise at being able to choose her position. Sakuya responds by insulting the Japanese, and then reveals that he is part-French, part Japanese. Hiyoko eventually decides to appoint herself Vice President, much to the amusement of Sakuya, who likes her nerve.

When stopping for a break on the hillside during the class hike on 21 April, Hiyoko goes to talk to Sakuya. Sakuya begins ranting angrily about having to hike on foot, because he believes exercise is for peasants. Hiyoko tells him that he is supposed to enjoy the change of scenery, and then invites him to come see the view. Sakuya reluctantly joins her, giving Hiyoko the impression that Sakuya was acting angrier than he really was.

On 16 May, Kazuaki Nanaki announces that the sports festival is coming up. When Sakuya states that he will not be running in any race, Kazuaki suggests that he be a cheerleader. Sakuya, mistakenly thinking that a "cheerleader" was like a "general", agrees and tells them to leave it to him.

During the sports festival on 21 May, Hiyoko goes over to the cheerleaders and sees Sakuya surrounded by a brass band. The brass band, which seems to consist of professionals, begins to play at Sakuya's command. Sakuya, who conducts the band in a flashy manner, orders Hiyoko to join in with the band and she is placed in charge of the cymbals.

On 12 June, Hiyoko arrived at class to find Ryouta lying next to a pile of overturned desks. Ryouta reveals that Sakuya called Okosan a stupid mongrel who only ever thinks of imaginary pudding, and when Ryouta tried to pull them apart Okosan used WING ATTACK on him. Hiyoko sides with Sakuya, throwing Okosan out the window after he refused to settle down in the classroom. Sakuya respects Hiyoko's judgment and calls her a credit to her simian ancestry.

Hiyoko wishes to become a famous artist on Tanabata (7 July).

On 20 July, the last day prior to summer vacation, Hiyoko went to the student council room to help with cleaning. After she was scolded by Sakuya for being "late", Sakuya started listing tasks for Hiyoko to perform. Hiyoko interrupts and asks whether she was expected to do the cleaning by herself. When Sakuya nonchalantly confirms Hiyoko's suspicion, Hiyoko decides to stand up to him. At first Hiyoko unsuccessfully argues that she was not a chairwoman and that the president should take the lead role in cleaning, but eventually she shoves a mop at him and demands that he clean too. Sakuya reveals that he had never used a mop before, but he reluctantly and obediently helps Hiyoko clean.

Hiyoko decides to invite Sakuya to the local summer festival on 6 August. Sakuya expresses shock at the "unsanitary" food prepared at the festival and is horrified when Hiyoko tells him that there haven't been any reports of food poisoning in two years (meaning there were reports three years prior). Despite his panic, Sakuya still bought a candy apple, claiming that he was going to mount it in a case at his mansion.

On 3 September, Sakuya expresses disapproval at the "lassitude" of Japan's educational system, criticizes mandatory school attendance, and complains that the school material bores him. Ryouta points out that Nanaki wouldn't punish students for falling asleep, not even Okosan, who slept through the entirety of class. Sakuya exclaims that no one takes school seriously and that lax policies destroy motivation and interest. He goes on to tell Hiyoko and Ryouta that while Nanaki is nationally famous, Doctor Iwamine is a world-renowned expert on pathology.

During the school festival on 25 September, Hiyoko decides to invite Sakuya to visit class 2-4's haunted house. Although Sakuya initials refuses on the grounds that a haunted house is a foolish charade for commoners, he agrees it might have some value after Hiyoko points out that keeping an eye on the masses is part of a noble's job. At the haunted mansion, Sakuya believes they'll be attacked by hostile ninjas because his nurse told him that mansions are certain to have ninjas. Hiyoko explains to him that it's ghost themed, and Sakuya assumes that it has nothing but childish tricks inside. Upon entering the haunted mansion, all of the lights go out. Sakuya panics because he can't see, he stepped in something nasty, and he was being touched by ghosts. Hiyoko exclaims that he shouldn't kick the poor ghosts, but she thinks that he enjoyed it despite his screaming.

After a music lesson and before a physics lesson on 19 October, Hiyoko sees Sakuya staring at a rack of instruments. When asked what was wrong, Sakuya asked Hiyoko what she thought of the arts. Hiyoko didn't think it was something she could put into words so easily. Sakuya replies with a quote from Dostoyevsky, then dismisses the quote as a common idea, all while looking angst ridden.

On 10 November, Hiyoko is going home after she finished cleaning when she hears someone playing the piano in the music room. She goes to investigate and finds Sakuya playing Waltz - Tschikovsky Op. 40 No. 9. Sakuya stops playing when Hiyoko makes her presence known, and Hiyoko praises Sakuya's talent. Sakuya doubted Hiyoko's ability to understand the arts, but he asked her what she loved. Hiyoko simply replied that she loved udon, and left Sakuya deep in thought.

During the beginning of winter break, Hiyoko is sitting in her cave when she receives a fancy letter from Sakuya inviting her to attend his Christmas party on 24 December at the Le Bel mansion. Hiyoko doesn't have anything else she's doing, so she decides to attend.

At the party, Hiyoko is impressed at the interior of the mansion, especially compared to her stone-age lifestyle, and Sakuya informs her that normally commoners like her can't enter the mansion. He also tells her that the Le Bels hold a party every month in order create a habitat for social discourse, as is a noble's duty. All of a sudden, Okosan bursts in through the window and declares that the establishment lacks pudding. Hiyoko demands that Okosan use his inside voice and throws Okosan back outside. Sakuya is grateful and tells Hiyoko that he would hire her as a bodyguard if she wanted.

On 2 February, Hiyoko buys some racing-blend beans to give to Sakuya on Legumentine's (3 February). The next day, Hiyoko catches Sakuya's attention and gifts him the racing-blend beans. After Hiyoko explained that girls give beans to the boys they like, Sakuya accepted the beans. When asked what she meant by "like", Hiyoko simply replied that his beautiful plumage was always on her mind and that she wanted to continue getting along.

On 12 February, Hiyoko spots Sakuya fallen in the wilderness near her cave and he begs her to carry him to her house. Once inside, Hiyoko questioned Sakuya, and he replies that he was on his way to her house and angrily tells her not to dare calling his house. When Hiyoko asks if Sakuya ran away, he rewords the phrase, preferring to say that he left of his own volition.

Sakuya then opens up to her, saying that when he was younger, he loved music and had plenty of instruments to play, but his father had all of them thrown away. Monsieur Le Bel's reasoning for his doing was that nobles mustn't be creators or artists, merely support the creators and artists they love. As with everything his father taught him, Sakuya complied, though he never fully got over that incident.

Hiyoko finds it an absurd, as he should be able to do what he wanted most despite what his father tells him to do. Sakuya explains that she didn't understand, as his world was very different from hers. Hiyoko shows him that he should be himself and pursue his dream of becoming a musician, giving him the courage to confront his father about it. In the normal ending, it ends with Hiyoko asking herself whether he will be able to win the confrontation.

In order to get Sakuya's complete ending, Hiyoko must attend music class on every elective day and push their Charisma stat to the maximum of 50.

On 12 April, Hiyoko had fun singing birdie melodies with the other birds. On 6 May, Hiyoko attended a music history lesson and muses on the wigs worn by famous composers.

"So much thinking outside the Bachs, I feel like I'm going to fly off the Handel! But this is what Moztart is all about, I guess."
Hiyoko Tosaka on music class[src]

On 9 June, as a result of attending music class, Hiyoko sees a bunch of birds, including Yuuya Sakazaki, gathered around the staffroom. Yuuya shows Hiyoko a news clipping titled "Brian, the First Intelligent Pigeon, Crowned Again" and tells her that Brian Pigeon won his seventh Pulitzer. When Hiyoko doesn't know who Brian Pigeon is, Yuuya informs her that Brian Pigeon is a skilled and insightful writer who runs the world's most famous blog.

On 26 June, everybirdie in music class sings solos and Okosan's is the most beautiful of all. On 11 July, Hiyoko notices that she always assigned to play percussion instruments like a "musical gorilla". On 3 September, Hiyoko forgets her recorder and so plays her hichiriki[1].

In the extended ending, we learn that Sakuya's father kicked him out, and now he has been living with Hiyoko while sharpening his talents as musician and even going to concerts. Though not used to it, he is complaining less about living in the wild. After this scene, Hiyoko reads a letter sent to her by Yuuya, who writes that there is something very important that he should reveal to Sakuya one day.

Shuu meets Hiyoko in 2188 on her first day as a sophomore, when she is searching the office for Ryouta. Thus far she had never been to the infirmary prior due to her exceptional health, and he doesn't take to her very kindly. When she decides to join the infirmary staff, he catches her going through his open file drawer claiming she was told to tidy up. He chases her off and warns her to be careful where she goes poking around.

That spring, at the sports festival, Shuu does field research on the marathon participants as he does every year, taking notes on as he eventually begins testing a performance-enhancing drug on Okosan.

Hiyoko wishes to rule the world from the shadows, and is able to progress to the following scene(s).

Shuu becomes fascinated with Hiyoko's budding interest in him. She visits the infirmary again during a break period and says she wanted to hear his voice. Later, he confronts Yuuya after school on the suspicion that the French pigeon has been searching his desk. When Hiyoko appears, Yuuya assures him the two were together in the courtyard, but Hiyoko denies this alibi, earning the doctor's favor. Shuu ushers her out of the infirmary and promptly kills Yuuya and preserves his flesh.

Before the students leave for summer vacation, Hiyoko asks if she'll be needed during break and at the same time confronts Shuu about rumors of missing students. She says it would be "cool" if the urban legend were true, which the doctor keeps in mind without telling her anything more on the subject. Dr. Iwamine spends the summer alone continuing research at the institution until he is invited by Hiyoko to the summer festival, who is so eager at the prospect she asked him to accompany her on the "0.05% chance" he would actually appear. Shuu condemns the spiritual origins of such a festival but attends with her regardless, in exchange for a lock of her hair. With each encounter the doctor's interest in primate psychology grows.

Shuu kills Anghel during this time, and he is grateful when Hiyoko retrieves the missing bird's ID from the stairwell and brings it to him. At the cultural festival, Shuu is supposedly the sponsor of the science club and can be seen depositing unneeded refuse in the school's incinerator. He refuses Hiyoko's invitation to lunch that day and becomes increasingly frustrated at her unpredictable nature.

The doctor consults his colleague Kazuaki on the ambiguous "statistical deviation" in the student data from recent years but receives no useful insight. That November, Hiyoko confesses her feelings for Shuu, which he claims to return to some extent. Since Yuuya hasn't been seen at St. Pigeonation's for over a month, Hiyoko takes on most of the infirmary duties in his stead. Dr. Iwamine sends a package to her on Christmas Eve containing a pen made from Yuuya's feather and Yuuya's flesh presented so that Hiyoko mistakes it for a Christmas chicken.

On Legumentine's, Hiyoko gifts the doctor some racing blend beans, though he is more impressed by the social construct of their expensive price tag than by the romantic gesture. Weeks later, Shuu dismembers an unidentified student in the infirmary, leaving the room and its evidence for Hiyoko to discover when she arrives for her last day of duty. There Hiyoko learns that the bird she had eaten on Christmas had been Yuuya. Shuu explains he can't love her more strongly than he already loves his research, but is pleased by her dedication, and so promises to put her body and brain to good experimental use while keeping her head as a trophy, and promptly kills Hiyoko by slicing her neck with a cleaver.

He finds himself more attracted to her after having preserved her head in a jar, and is opposed to the idea of simply relinquishing her to the Hawk Party. The doctor plans to break the jar and commit suicide, though only after confirming Hiyoko did indeed have feelings for him. Hiyoko has three response options:

Anghel Higure is the reincarnation of the Crimson Fallen Angel of Judecca. The student card Hiyoko finds on the floor actually belongs to him, and has his real name on it - Yoshio Akagi (赤木 良夫). He hates hearing his real name. Anghel's student card became the proof of alliance between Hiyoko and Anghel when he scribbled their pact on it and gave it to her.

Anghel is usually alert to the presence of Hawk agents around and even gives Hiyoko a protective charm when she asks him out for the summer festival. (The charm was for 'easy child-birth', and seems to be his subtle way of saying he likes her.) Though he may seem strange or weird, he's actually one of the few birds that is actively aware of the evil that's lurks in St. Pigeonation's, and that Shuu is very dangerous.

He is also one of the few doves who want to deal with Shuu directly. During his ending, he engages in a RPG turn-based battle with a demonic tree-bird called Himnesia that Shuu summoned. During this battle, Shuu takes on the identity of the evil dark sorcerer Wallenstein, and starts talking like a JRPG final boss. Anghel's mapping pen is his weapon, called Saekro'm the Holy Spear, and he lends it to Hiyoko to fight Himnesia and Shuu with.

Hiyoko also participates in the RPG battle. Stats become important, as they change into HP and MP bars. It is possible to lose this fight and get a game over if you don't do enough damage to Himnesia before it kills her. At the end of the battle, Hiyoko admits to remembering her past life as an angel who sealed Anghel.

If Hiyoko chooses to get a job at Torimi Cafe and not give the job to Ryouta, then she will be introduced to a budgerigar named Rabu, a regular customer at Torimi Cafe.

On 29 July, Hiyoko stayed out late on the town and ran into some punkgeons, who demand that Hiyoko give them cash. Azami Koshiba shows up and together the two knock out the punkgeons with Sparrow Kicks and punches. As thanks, Hiyoko invites Azami to visit Torimi Cafe.

Azami visits Torimi Cafe on 24 August, Hiyoko's last day working her summer job. She greets her new protégé, but her expression hardens when Rabu asks her if it was really her. Hiyoko tries to diffuse the tension by vouching for Rabu's niceness, but Azami tells her to stay out of it and reveals that Rabu is the same Hosokawa Blaster that ran away when she confessed her feelings to him.

When Rabu apologizes and begs for Azami to listen to him, Azami ridicules Rabu's new physique, the result of six months of tea and cake, and gives him the nickname "Mister Fava Bean". She claimed that she no longer loves him.

This ending is triggered if Hiyoko decides to bring up Azami's scooter, which has the named "Blaster" emblazoned on its back. Azami admits that she hadn't forgotten Blaster and Rabu takes advantage of the opportunity to explain.

When Azami confessed her feelings to Blaster, he panicked, afraid that he wouldn't be able to settle down and make a good husband and father. Upon reflection, he decided to start a clean life and make some money to become worthy of her. After his explanation, he asks Azami to marry him, to which she replies, "Of course!"

Exclusive to the PS4 and Vita HD remake of Hatoful Boyfriend is an added route for Tohri Nishikikouji. This route is inaccessible in the PC release of the HD remake, but can be experienced for free as a standalone VN released by Hato Moa on her gumroad[2].

To activate this route during gameplay, the player needs to have completed at least one of Shuu's endings. Shuu's route must then be followed once more, and will eventually give the option to begin Tohri's route on 9/3.

Tohri has set hidden cameras in the infirmary and halls in order to watch Shuu. Should Hiyoko decide to destroy these cameras, he will later appear on the school grounds being chased by Okosan. Following this, the protagonist will find him in the infirmary, during which they introduce themselves. Tohri then leaves again, deciding to give the protagonist a business card before he goes.

Should the protagonist decide to inform Shuu of the spying and give him the business card, Tohri is never seen again and it is presumed that he was murdered by Shuu. The game then ends as a bad ending.

Should the protagonist decide to contact Tohri instead of informing Shuu, he claims he's too busy until the protagonist tells him she can provide him information on Shuu's activities, as she is currently helping in the infirmary. He then accepts her offer to meet him.

The two later meet at the café, during which Tohri reveals his history with Shuu to the protagonist. He explains that Shuu's real name is Isa Souma, but doesn't know why he is using a fake name at St. Pigeonation's. The protagonist believes that Tohri's reasons behind his hatred of Shuu aren't as bad as he thinks, but Tohri is convinced otherwise. The two spend the remainder of the day talking about Shuu.

While the protagonist is cleaning the infirmary, she is reflecting on Tohri when she accidentally mentions her thoughts out loud. Shuu, who happened to be in the room, asks her what she was talking about. Distressed, the protagonist quickly leaves to take out the trash before Shuu can pressure her for an answer.

The protagonist then sees Tohri by the garbage and confronts him. He claims he has come to the school to get his revenge, procuring what he calls the "Nishikikouji Masterpiece No. 632: Miniature Optical Weapon 'DIMENSION BOMBER'", appearance akin to a raygun. Tohri explains that it can "eliminate a target without leaving a single molecule intact". The protagonist, unhappy with Tohri's intentions of killing Shuu, takes the weapon from him and smashes it. He then leaves, upset that she destroyed his invention.

Later, while the protagonist is once again cleaning the infirmary, Shuu happens to see the business card Tohri left behind. He then claims that he has no recollection of the name, and the protagonist discovers that Shuu never cared enough about Tohri to even bother remembering him.

The protagonist will then arrange for them to meet so she can give him beans on Legumentine's. He is extremely happy when she tells him she's giving him beans. The protagonist asks if this is the first time he's been given beans, which he denies, albeit while stammering profusely.

The two will next meet when Tohri summons her to the café once more. He tells her that he's headed into his final battle with Shuu, and that he has a new, upgraded weapon - the "Nishikikouji Masterpiece No. 706: Ultra-Miniature Optical Weapon 'BLUE FLASH SPARK'". The protagonist once again tries to dissuade Tohri, explaining that Shuu doesn't even remember who he is, and that his anger is one-sided. This only serves to further anger him, much to her disappointment. Eventually, the protagonist tells Tohri that she thinks he's beautiful, but that his beauty is being wasted on his fixation on Shuu. In the end, Tohri gives in and tells her that he will put off his revenge until a better time, for her sake.

Shuu, alone in the infirmary, then sneezes. He mentions the common superstition that people sneeze when they are being talked about, and the credits roll.
